Workshop 6: D.C. Johnson

Relative Solmization with Applications to Brass Playing Techniques

In this workshop, participants will experience and discuss the benefits of using relative solmization in the context of playing brass instruments. Because the mechanics of playing brass instruments (trumpet, horn, trombone, euphonium, and tuba) make use of the overtones in a series of harmonics, understanding and incorporating solmization into their study is effective and beneficial. Based on Music Learning Theory (Gordon), workshop activities will include teaching exercises and practical examples of singing, playing, transposing, and improvising.
